The Effects of Setting

The Effects of Setting
Author Willa Cather embedded literary devices, such as metaphors, similes, and personification, within her writing.

"As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the colour of wine-stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running."

"The grave, with its tall red grass that was never mowed, was like a little island."

"Winter comes down savagely over a little town on the prairie. The wind that sweeps in from the open country strips away all the leafy screens that hide one yard from another in summer, and the houses seem to draw closer together. The roofs, that looked so far away across the green treetops, now stare you in the face, and they are so much uglier than when their angles were softened by vines and shrubs.

Chunk #1: Comment the effect of the setting on the characters within the novel.
The setting going from spring to winter makes it harder on the characters to work, because of the conditions.
Chunk #2: discuss the effect a setting on you, including imagery (lots of adjectives) and a simile or a metaphor as you describe the land.
The effects of the setting of Winter on me, makes me think of cold weather, gettting sick, clear white snow falling on the land and trees making every thing look so beautiful and fake, the warmth of heat and hot coco, and the coldness of snow hitting my face when im outside but then it makes me think of sadness and loneliness because some people are usually alone during this important time of year the time when everyone should be together and joyful, spending time with their loved ones and friends.

Agrument/Why grades shouldn't matter when getting driver's license

  • Assertion- Why grades shouldn't matter when getting driver's license.
Evidence-Concrete Detail
  • Getting your driver's license shouldn't be judged on your school grades it should be judged on how mature you are with your choices and ways of doing things.
  • Commentary 1- Turning 16 is a big thing for alot of people because it means getting your driver's license and getting to drive any where you want without having to have your mom or dad take you there.
  • Many public high schools, school districts, and even states across the nation have implemented rules that require students to maintain a specific grade point average in order to legally obtain and carry a driver's license, even the very immature people who have good grades but I don't think it should be that way I think you should have to pass a certain maturity test to get your driver's license.
  • Grades have nothing to do with focusing on the road i'm pretty sure that you dont have to do math, english, science, or social studies to know how to turn on a car and drive down the road in your own lane, not hiting another car or wreaking.
  • Most people i've talked to have either said "Grades are completly a stupid thing to go by when driving because the most immature or unfocused person could be behind the wheel and it makes me feel so unsafe knowing that." or "I'm a very mature person and everyone knows that but i'm not able to get my license because i'm not smart enough to get my grades to a certain point and maintain it."
  • Some states do not have legislation linking driving privileges with students' academic performance, some schools have taken matters into their own hands. For example- These public schools have created guidelines that impact the driving privileges students have in coming and leaving campus. At Floyd Central High School, they prohibit students from driving to and from school if they fail to meet the FCHS attendance standards. Specifically, if a student acquires 10 absences, tardies, or early departures, then he or she may be subject to driving privilege restrictions, which I think we at Batesville High School should do too.
Opposing Claims/They say:
  • Parents and some students say "grades are a great thing to concider when getting your driver's license at 16."
  • Some other people say "Getting your driver's license shouldn't be judge on grades it should be judged on your maturity and they way you concentrate while driving."
My Rebuttal/I Say:
  • Although I agree with grades being used to a point, I still think that it should be judge on maturity.
My paragraph
Grades should matter when getting your driver's license at the age of 16. That privelage shouldn't be left up to the school, getting you're driver's license should be judged by the police on your maturity, on how you act behind the wheel. When I ask people about grades being used to judge getting your license they say getting you're driver's license shouldn't matter what your grades are because your grades aren't going to tell how your going to act behind the wheel. Another reason grades shouldn't matter is even though you have good grades it doesn't mean your mature it just means you are good at what they are teaching you. Thus, me and others agree that grades shouldn't matter against the others opinion.

book review on speak

Speak is a cleaver and an ironic title for a story in which the main character chooses not to speak.  Speak is written in the mind of an introverted teenage girl, like excerpts from her personal diary during her miserable freshman year of high school. Instead of blending in and finding her way through high school. She withdraws and secludes herself from the other students. She calls herself an "outcast." Melinda is so desperate to hide from the world; she turns an old janitor's closet at the high school into her safe haven. She cuts classes to hide in her closet. How lonely could this teenage girl be? All of these characteristics are common in assault victims. Melinda has been seriously disturbed by something traumatic and doesn't feel comfortable talking about it, nor does she really trust anyone. Most teenagers wouldnt call the cops in an amazing party if something really bad didnt happen, but then again some teens dont tell most people about tramatic things that happen to them because the are afraid that they will be treated different. So instead of telling people what truely happened at that party she holds it in and deals with being an outcast and having no one to talk to or any clique to join. At the end of the story a shocking truth comes out and she tells her secret she has been holding in since that day of the party. I would recommend this book to anyone with a heart because it will touch you so deeply expecially if you have a similar story.

Pleasant Plains, Arkansas
I am from a little hick town called Pleasant Plains. They are all about farming and living the country life. When i'm in Pleasant Plains I see fields and barns, I smell dirt and I feel at home and comfortable. People in Pleasant Plains are all usually famers and work on farms caring for animals and living the great country life. When I lived in Pleasant Plains I worked on farms with horses, donkeys, and lots of other animals, and I never complained because it was very fun and everytime I go back to Pleasant Plains I go and work on a farm with my grandpa. When im in Pleasant Plains I go to the farm and play with the horses, I love horses, and its so cool how when I pull up the donkey will start breeing because he knows that its me in the truck. Pleasant Plains is where I call home and always will.

Advertisement Analysis

Do you believe in animal abuse? Do you hurt little defenceless animals? The little piglets in this abuse on animals ad. is representing animal abuse in the farming world today.

The purpose of this ad. on animal abuse is to help this organization stop the  cruelty of animal abuse. They want people to donate money so they can protect animals from the harmful things that some people do.

The tone of this abuse ad. is pitful, because anyone who would hurt a poor defenceless animals is a horrible person. Another tone for this ad. would be sentimental because someone is actually taking the time to save these poor animals from anymore abuse.

So therefore this ad. about animal abuse is pitiful and sentimental and people should help to end animal abuse. Do it for the little piglets!

Henry vs. Forrest

This may just be my opinion but I think Forest is a way better warrior then Henry because Forest saved people and Henry was scared of war.

In The Red Badge of Courage, Henry Fleming, known as "young soldier", he was in the Union Army or Civil War as some people call it. He was untested in battle, had questions of his own courage and encounters with hard times about the experiecce of war. Within a few days at war he changes from a tempestuous and immature adolescent to a war-weary adult. Henry Fleming ran from battle because he was scared and thought he wasn't ready for such a challenge. The only reason he went into war was to make himself look stronger and to impress the girls.

In the movie, Forest Gump, he was prepared for the troubles and challenges of the war. Forest fought in the Vietnam War, he followed his orders well without distractions. He didnt run from war he ran for war, because he was prepared for the commitment of the war. Forest got the Medals of Honor forbid bravery in Vietnam, because he rescued a bunch of the other soilders including his luetenant even though he only went back for Bubba but out of the goodness of his heart he helped the others.

Even after all the research and information on both of these soldiers I still think that Forest Gump is a braver and better soldier than Henry Fleming ever could be. In that comment it seems that they both should and will be remember for their brave acts in wars.

Wounded Warrior Project

The Wounded Warrior Project is an organization  of people who came together to help our wounded soilders. The Wounded Warrior Project began in 2000 in Roanoke, Virginia by John Melia. They do this thing where you buy a backpack full of different stuff for almost one-hundred dollors and you get to send it to any soilder you want. This organization is a good thing in our world to help show that we do care about what is happening over there, where some peoples loved ones are being killed and hurt very bad. I, for one, think that everyone should take a part in this great thing, to show that we care.

My book review: Clean by Amy Reed

In this book five teenagers get hooked on drugs and it ruins their life but their parents send them to this drug rehab place where they become sober and end up being friends. They learn alot about eachother and become real close. Toward the end you start to see that they really do care and want to be better people and move forward in live. I really can't relate to this book but I did enjoy reading it, I guess just seeing people overcome a huge problem made the book more interesting.I recommend this book to anyone loves to see people overcome things.

War is...

War is depressing, because people are dieing.
War is murdering, its just the same as killing someone except you dont go to prison.
War is sad, because we are losing our loved ones.
War is a waste of time and money, the time and money we use fighting a war could be used to help us improve.
War is unpeaceful, because people are fighting and killing one another.
War is survival of the fittest, only the strongest will survive.
War is changing, it makes a big impact on our lives.
War is taking, it is taking our loved ones and killing them for something that might not even matter in a few years.
War is standing, standing up for something strong.
War is suffering, it makes familys and the people fighting hurt.

Book Review

The book I read is "I heart you, You haunt me" By: Lisa Schroeder. In this book I found that true love even last after the person or people are dead. In this book Ava gets this boyfriend, that she falls for, and he dies. Even though he is dead she can still feel his presence and knows that he is still there with her. She doesnt tell anyone that she feels this way because she thinks they will think she is 'crazy' or just think its from her being through something tragic, toward the end though she meets this guy named Lyric and she thinks he is so sweet and perfect. After awhile her dead boyfriends 'ghost' ends up seeing that she is happy and finally sets them free. I thought that this book was very romantic and true at the same time. I would recomind that people who like this kind of books to read it.

Remembering 9/11

9/11 was and still is a tragic and horid day for everyone in the United States. They commited a horrible act of terrorism, which brought us into a war that has been going on for 10 years. As soon as it happened we blamed al-Qaeada for all of it without even knowing it was him responsible for the horid act of terrorism. The people responsible for this horrible and tragic act should be thrown in prison for life and never let out.

Whenever i think of all the people that died because of someones stupid hate toward us it makes me very mad. They killed innocent people for their personal problems, which i think is dumb and immature. I think that they should be punished for doing the horid things that they did to us that day. They should feel horrible for killing innocent people. They had no right to just come in our country and do the thing they did, because we have never did anything to them like that.

They are proud of theirself for killing innnocent american people, which caused us to go over to their country for 10 long years and try to protect our country from another horid act like the one that happened on 9/11. And even after the tragic event that happened we are going to build an other building. Which will probly give them another chance to do the same thing they did.

These people should be rotting in a prison for what they did to us. If we ever did get them in a prison i think that they should be tortured for every tear and heartache we had on that day. i believe it is completely wrong that these people got away with this act of terrorism.

"i am"

I am pretty and confused
I wonder why people judge me
I hear that I am loved
I see your heart
I want to be in your life
I am pretty and confused

I pretend to be quiet
I feel loved by your eyes
I touch your heart
I worry that i've lost you
I cry because i know your leaving
I am pretty and confused

I understand that true love is special
I say that you'll be back
I dream of a neverending love
I hope to meet you soon
I am pretty and confused
